How to Read Nutrition Facts Tables

jaiedocere, healthy-eating

The Nutrition Facts table is on the side of most packaged foods. It’s often found close to the ingredient listing.

The purpose of it is to help consumers make better nutrition decisions. When people can see the number of calories, carbs, sodium, etc. in food, they should be able to eat better, right?

Are digestive enzymes for me?

jaiedocere, gut, healthy-eating, supplements

Digestion is the process that breaks food down so that it can be absorbed. Digestion starts in the mouth with salivary enzymes and chewing, and continues into the stomach where more enzymes are added along with churning motion.

So often, I find that people with digestive issues want to jump straight into using a supplement. But as a naturopathic doctor, I like to try other strategies first to improve digestion.

Oh, that elusive sleep. That time to relax and regenerate. To heal and repair.

If you need that coffee or two (or three) every morning you may get some very useful tips in this post.

Sleep isn’t just important for your mind and body to have energy and be alert. Lack of sleep can contribute to serious health issues which you don’t want.

So let me have your attention for this “tip-filled” post on the importance of sleep and how you can get your fair share. I’ll even throw in an amazing caffeine-free latte recipe for your afternoon “pick me up”.

Is my metabolism slow?

You may feel tired, cold or that you’ve gained weight.  Maybe your digestion seems a bit more “sluggish”.

You may be worried that your metabolism is slow.

Can this happen?  Why might metabolic rates slow down?

What is Metabolism?

This word “metabolism” is thrown around a lot these days.

You know that if yours is too slow you might gain weight. But what exactly does this all mean?

Well technically “metabolism” is the word to describe all of the biochemical reactions in your body. It’s how you take in nutrients and oxygen and use them to fuel everything you do.

Your body has an incredible ability to grow, heal, and generally stay alive. And without this amazing biochemistry you would not be possible.

Coffee: Is it good for me or not?

jaiedocere, healthy-eating

Coffee is one of those things – you either love it or hate it. You know if you like the taste or not. You know how it makes you feel (i.e. your gut, your mind, etc.).

And sometimes we grow to love it because going “out for coffee” is such a societal norm.

But how do we know if it’s good for us. The headlines say it’s great one day and the next day you should avoid it!

There is actual science behind why different people react differently to it. It’s a matter of your genetics and how much coffee you’re used to drinking.

At my house we’re settling into the school routine, it’s getting cooler outside, and the noses have started to drip almost non-stop.

Below are my kid-approved recommendations.

But first, a review of the best ways to avoid illness: focusing on the “basics” and practicing good hand-washing techniques.

Everything You Think You Know About Healthy Eating is Wrong

Oh my – nutrition and diet info is everywhere!

And each expert and association tries to lead you in their direction because they know best and their advice is going to help you. Right?

Well, maybe…

Everyone has heard (and maybe lived through) the intense focus on how much you eat. This has gotten way too much attention because while this does affect your weight and energy level, it’s certainly not the “holy grail” of health.

Let’s focus a bit more on the often overlooked (and proven) benefits of what you eat and drink and how you eat and drink it.

The Naturopathic Basics

Sometimes we all need a little reminder about the simple things we can do to prevent illness and illuminate health. Here are what I like to call “The Basics.” I have to remind myself to do them every day!
