How can I test adrenal function?

One way to test adrenal function is to measure the hormones that the adrenal glands produce. The most common hormone that we check is cortisol which can be measured in blood, saliva or urine. Because cortisol is released in a circadian pattern throughout the day, multiple checks might be needed to fully assess adrenal function.

Your adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys. They are endocrine glands which means that they make hormones. The brain controls how much hormone is made through an complex and interactive system called the HPA axis.

The hormones the adrenals make are classified as glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and androgens.
